How To Not Lose Your Luggage When Traveling

Luggage carousel
Losing luggage can ruin your vacation

You know the sinking feeling when it seems like everyone’s luggage is coming off the belt except yours? Normally, of course, it works out fine, but the stricter airlines become with carry-on bags, and the more we’re having to check-in, you can’t be too careful these days.

Plus if worst comes to worst and it does get mislaid, having taken a few simple steps to label your luggage can help reunite you and your bag in a timely fashion. It only takes a couple of minutes, but it can mean the difference between getting your bag back and landing at your final destination with an insurance claim to fill out.

Label your bag, inside as well as out: It sounds obvious, but you’d be amazed how many people carefully stick a label on the handle of their case, but don’t put any kind of ID inside. If a bag gets damaged or mishandled, the label will be one of the first things to go. So stick a piece of paper with your details on it in the inside pocket, as well.

Pack something really memorable: Brenda Cantrell from Alabama’s Unclaimed Baggage Center knows what she’s talking about when it comes to lost luggage. Her top tip? If your bag is lost, airlines will ask you to describe the case itself, and list three things inside it. If you have something really memorable or unusual, it’ll be easier to trace it to you. It doesn’t have to be big or weighty – she suggests packing a little neon troll figurine in the side pocket.

Check-in early: The later you check-in, the more rushed your bag’s journey to the gate is going to be, and the more chance there is of it running into problems. Even if the airline says check in closes 45 minutes before your flight departs, if you’re checking luggage, you should arrive at least an hour early.

Don’t change your flight last minute: I had a heart-stopping 30 minutes last summer when I tried to go standby on an earlier flight from San Francisco to Los Angeles than I’d been booked on. I didn’t make it onto the earlier plane, but my luggage did, and, despite the airline’s assurance that a rep would take delivery of it for me, it wasn’t waiting for me when I arrived in LA. Eventually I found it, still doing the rounds on the carousel two hours after it had arrived. I counted myself lucky someone else hadn’t decided to take it home with them.

Book a flight with as few changes as possible: In Europe, despite its appalling reputation, the airline that loses the fewest bags is Ryanair. It puts its success down to being a point-to-point airline – there are no changes, and no transfers, which mean fewer opportunities to lose your luggage. Try and keep flights direct, and the smaller the airport you fly through (therefore the fewer bags staff handle), the more likely things are to go smoothly.
